Customize Figure Style when Plotting by Python Matplotlib Package: matplotlibrc File and .mplstyle File

matplotlibrc file of Python Matplotlib package is used to control all kinds of properties of elements in figures. These properties are called “rc settings” or “rc parameters”, where “rc” is the abbreviation of “runtime configuration”1. The default path of Matplotlib matplotlibrc file of current Python environment can be got by command matplotlib.matplotlib_fname(). Take my case, I have:

These comments provide some valuable information.

(1) By modifying matplotlibrc file, we can customize our own styles. However, it is not recommended to directly edit this default file. To new a style through matplotlibrc file, we should copy this default file into the search path, followed by modifying the copy.

As can be seen, for Windows systems, it is recommended to put the copy into the directory $HOME/.matplotlib/matplotlibrc, but actually it is not the only choice and also not the top priority search path.

According to the documentation3, Matplotlib will look for matplotlibrc file in four directories following a precedence order. The first position is current folder of the script; aforementioned path $HOME/.matplotlib/matplotlibrc is the 3rd; the default matplotlibrc file is the 4th.

(2) Another message is that in matplotlibrc file, the properties of following aspects are that we can directly control:

  1. Backends: BACKENDS
    1. Backends are used for displaying Matplotlib figures, on the screen, or for writing to files. A lot of documentation on the website and in the mailing lists refers to the “backend” and many new users are confused by this term. Matplotlib targets many different use cases and output formats. Some people use Matplotlib interactively from the Python shell and have plotting windows pop up when they type commands. Some people run Jupyter notebooks and draw inline plots for quick data analysis. Others embed Matplotlib into graphical user interfaces like PyQt or PyGObject to build rich applications. Some people use Matplotlib in batch scripts to generate postscript images from numerical simulations, and still others run web application servers to dynamically serve up graphs. To support all of these use cases, Matplotlib can target different outputs, and each of these capabilities is called a backend; the “frontend” is the user facing code, i.e., the plotting code, whereas the “backend” does all the hard work behind-the-scenes to make the figure. There are two types of backends: user interface backends (for use in PyQt/PySide, PyGObject, Tkinter, wxPython, or macOS/Cocoa); also referred to as “interactive backends”) and hardcopy backends to make image files (PNG, SVG, PDF, PS; also referred to as “non-interactive backends”).4
  2. Lines: LINES

    1. AGG (Anti-Grain Geometry) is a 2D rendering graphics library written in C++. It features anti-aliasing and sub-pixel resolution. It is not a graphics library, per se, but rather a framework to build a graphics library upon.5

  23. Interactive keymaps: INTERACTIVE KEYMAPS

Matplotlib .mplstyle filePermalink

Although customizing style directly through matplotlibrc file is feasible, this method seems not that commonly used. Users prefer to define style by .mplstyle file and use the style by matplotlib.style.use function78. This way is more concise and appears more frequently in the official documentation when it comes to customizing styles.

For example, if we want to use ggplot style, which is pre-defined by Matplotlib package, we can set by matplotlib.style.use function at the beginning of the script:

Here it should be noted that, if we comment the code plt.style.use('ggplot') and re-run the script, the rendered figure is still ggplot style. Which means that, this kind of style set by plt.style.use functions throughout the entire runtime, unless we restart IDE.

In this case, ggplot style is defined by a .mplstyle file.

As mentioned above, the default matplotlibrc file is stored in ...\\Python\\Python312\\site-packages\\matplotlib\\mpl-data. In the same folder mpl-data, a sub-folder named stylelib exists, and in which there is a ggplot.mplstyle file. The ggplot.mplstyle file defines ggplot style, and its content is:

Executing plt.style.use('ggplot') would make style settings in this file functional.

I don’t know exact style setting mechanism, but I guess those .mplstyle files have relation with matplotlibrc file, or, the settings in the former overload corresponding ones in the latter when using plt.style.use function, because the setting syntax in both files looks very similar. Probably for this reason, users tend to define a .mplstyle to customize their own style, as it looks more concise and effective.

Actually, those settings in .mplstyle file are called “style sheet” in the official documentation11, and this documentation gives more details about the differences between matplotlibrc file and .mplstyle file; they indeed look the same, but not exactly.

“Another way to change the visual appearance of plots is to set the rcParams in a so-called style sheet and import that style sheet with matplotlib.style.use. In this way you can switch easily between different styles by simply changing the imported style sheet. A style sheets looks the same as a matplotlibrc file, but in a style sheet you can only set rcParams that are related to the actual style of a plot. Other rcParams, like backend, will be ignored. matplotlibrc files support all rcParams. The rationale behind this is to make style sheets portable between different machines without having to worry about dependencies which might or might not be installed on another machine. For a full list of rcParams see matplotlib.rcParams. For a list of rcParams that are ignored in style sheets see matplotlib.style.use.”

Another official webpage3 points out that style sheet have a higher precedence order than settings in matplotlibrc file, which is for granted.

“Once a matplotlibrc file has been found, it will not search any of the other paths. When a style sheet is given with style.use('<path>/<style-name>.mplstyle'), settings specified in the style sheet take precedence over settings in the matplotlibrc file.”

To test this method, I make a copy of ggplot.mplstyle file in stylelib folder, name it as ggplot_MODIFIED.mplstyle, and merely change font.size property from 10.0 to 20.0 in it:

Next, I re-run Script 1 but change the style option of plt.style.use function:

By the way, when executing plt.style.use('ggplot_MODIFIED') for the first time after creating ggplot_MODIFIED.mplstyle file, we should restart IDE to load the newly defined style, otherwise an error will occur:

And similarly, we should restart IDE after updating .mplstyle file.

In addition, besides the folder stylelib, user-defined .mplstyle files can be put into other directories, because pyplot.style.use function can accept file path (and even URL)7.
